Marist senior Kaitlin Kenny doesn't just crouch behind the plate and catch pitches.
She watches everything on the field like a hawk.
So it went during the top of the fifth inning of Marist's 9-0 East Suburban Catholic victory over Marian Catholic, when with two on and two out Kenny suddenly sprang up from the dish and trotted briskly to the circle for a visit with pitcher Audra Hecker.
"They (the baserunners) started calling where the pitch was going," Kenny said, smiling. "We just decided to do a little switcheroo with the signs."
Hecker stranded those runners and all of the others that Marian was able to get on base, finishing with a four-hit shutout as the RedHawks got off to a good start on the final week of the regular season.
Brooke Wyderski, Brooke Wilson and Angela Sorrentino led the way offensively with three hits each, while Kenny contributed a pair of two-run doubles for Marist (18-9, 9-6).
Alex Nickel had two hits to pace Marian (14-14, 6-11).
In all, the RedHawks pounded out 15 hits. Kenny drove in the first two runs with a double in the bottom of the second that plated Wilson and Sorrentino (both had singled).
Kenny also drove in the RedHawks' final two runs, with another double in the sixth after base hits by the same duo of Wilson and Sorrentino.
Not bad out of the No. 8 spot in the lineup.
"Our whole lineup hits so I feel like I'm in the act no matter where I'm at," Kenny said. "We're all hitters."
Marist scored four runs in the second, one each in the third and fourth and three more in the sixth. Key hits included RBI singles by Sorrentino and Hecker. Sorrentino also added a sacrifice fly.
Marist only advanced one runner to third base, when Becca Stanton led off the fifth with a single and moved around. The bases were loaded with two out when Hecker got Natalia Szyller on a fielder's choice grounder to Sorrentino at third.
"I felt strong after a day off," Hecker said. "I really wanted to come out strong for Senior Day. We want this to be like last year, coming on with a winning streak and going on to state."
