Hypothetically your freshman muffin try's out for the varsity. The coach tells her she is on the varsity, but she will not play much... The coach then says it is up to her but if she wants she can be a starter on the sophomore team instead... What is the best option, what is the best way to get better...?

I say put her on the varsity.... Playing lower level competition isn't always helpful...

I think it depends on the school. If it's a school that plays top competition the sophomore competition may not be bad. If it doesn't play top competion the sophomore team is glorified park district. I happen to think that the girl benefits from practicing with the varsity every day, although I also think it's incumbent upon the coach to find the girl playing time. It doesn't make a lot of sense in many cases to bring her up and have her sit.

Of course it makes sense for the coach to sit her on the bench. The coaches job is to win at the high school level, amongst other things. Chances are the girl is playing travel softball, so she will be getting some reps on her travel softball team, along with reps in practice and then some limited reps when the opportunity arises. The HS coach should take his best X (however many girls he wants to carry on the varsity roster) and go with it. If it makes the varsity team better, then the coach is doing their job.
With some many opportunities for girls to get reps in travel sports and so forth, I believe the limited varsity experience would be well worth it!
