Courier-News’ top softball teams, players 03/27/2014, 7:20pm CDT By Gary Larsen Gary Larsen breaks down the top Elgin-area teams and players as the 2014 softball season gets under way.
Top 5 teams
1. St. Charles East: Ten returning players from last year’s Class 4A second-place team, including a 22-game winner in pitcher Haley Beno, have the Saints excited about their chances in 2014.
2. St. Charles North: The five-time defending UEC River champs will be led by Courier-News Player of the Year and Northwestern-bound Sabrina Rabin, who had a 1.49 ERA last year and stole 35 bases as the team’s leadoff hitter.
3. Bartlett: Seven starters return to a team that went 27-10 and placed second in the UEC River last year, including team leaders Kayla Habertstich, Alex Morales, and Holly Pagan.
4. Burlington Central: The defending Big Northern Conference champs will battle it out with Marengo for conference supremacy this year, led by the pitching duo of Brooke Gaylord and Emily Kisch.
5. Elgin: First-year coach Nick Bumbales sees his Maroons as a “sleeper team” this year, led by Missouri-St. Louis-bound pitcher and power-hitting shortstop Jennah Perryman and fellow captains Anna Eckholm and Kelly Bremer.
